Canyon View: A Buffalo River Treehouse with Arkansas Grand Canyon Views (Sleeps 8)
If you've ever said that you wanted to wake up in a treehouse, this is the one we'd send you to. Canyon View Treehouse sits up above the Arkansas Grand Canyon, about a 10 minute drive from the Jasper square, and the first thing everybody does when they walk in is head straight for the balcony. We don't blame them. We do it too.
Set an alarm for sunrise
We mean it. The sun comes up over the valley, and on a lot of mornings there's fog sitting down in the canyon below you. Watching it light up and slowly lift is one of the prettiest things we've seen around here, and we've seen plenty. Flip through the guestbook and you'll find page after page of people writing about the sunrises at Canyon View. One guest called it a million dollar view, and we've given up trying to say it better.
If you're not from around here, the Arkansas Grand Canyon is what locals call the huge valley off Highway 7 south of Jasper. It goes on for miles, and from the balcony you're looking right into it.
What it's like inside
Here's the part people don't expect from a treehouse: it's warm and cozy, and it feels like home about five minutes after you set your bags down.
Downstairs is one big open room. Kitchen, table and couch all together, so whoever's on pancake duty isn't stuck staring at a wall. The king bedroom is down here too, and so is the bathroom. It has an air tub and a shower with three heads, one of them a waterfall head. People bring that shower up in reviews more than you'd think.
Up the stairs is the loft. There are two bunk sets with a full on the bottom and a twin on top, so six people can sleep up there. Kids think it's the greatest thing ever. A few grown-ups have told us the same, mostly because you can see out over the canyon from the bunks.
Coming in winter?
Good, because this is kind of our secret. Once the leaves come down, you can see a lot farther across the canyon than you can in July. The trails are quiet, and you'll often have an overlook all to yourself.
We decorate all our cabins for Christmas, so if you come in December, you'll walk in to find it already decked out for the holidays. And if we're lucky enough to get snow, it's beautiful up there. Bring warm socks, fill up that air tub and plan on staying in.
Where we'd send you
This is what we tell our own friends when they come to visit:
Eat in Jasper. Ozark Cafe and Jasper Pizza Co. are two of our go-tos, both about 10 minutes away. For dinner with a view, Cliff House sits right on the edge of the canyon.
Hike Round Top Mountain. It's only 6 minutes from the treehouse, and it's a great one for kids.
Drive through Boxley Valley early in the morning or right before dark. That's your best shot at seeing the elk out in the fields. It's a bit of a drive, but worth it.
Get on the Buffalo River. Pruitt Landing is about 17 minutes away. When it's warm, floating the river is why a lot of people find us in the first place.
We wrote up a lot more in our local's guide to fall on the Buffalo River.
