Mountain Crest is a two-story treetop cabin that sleeps up to 10 guests, with two bedrooms, two bathrooms, a stone fireplace, and a wraparound balcony built for exactly this kind of view. The master suite has its own jetted air tub and a three-head waterfall shower — the kind of detail that turns "we hiked all day" into "we hiked all day and then soaked it off overlooking the mountains." We say this to almost every guest planning their first trip: leave room in your schedule to do nothing. It's tempting to plan every hour, especially if this is your first time in the Buffalo River/Jasper, AR area. But some of the best moments at Mountain Crest happen when there's nothing on the calendar — coffee on the balcony before anyone else is awake, a slow morning with the fireplace going, coming back early enough one evening to watch the light change over the ridgeline instead of rushing off to the next stop.
What's Nearby (and What's a Short Drive Away)
Here's where being local actually helps, because a map doesn't tell the whole story in Newton County.
Mountain Crest sits south of downtown Jasper on Scenic Highway 7 — the same stretch of road that runs past the Arkansas Grand Canyon Overlook and the Cliff House Inn, both just a few minutes from the cabin. If you only have an afternoon, that's where we'd send you first: pull off at the overlook for the view, then grab a table at the Cliff House if you want to eat while you look at it.
Some of the Buffalo National River's best-known spots — Lost Valley, Steel Creek, Boxley Valley — are on the opposite side of Jasper, reached by heading north into town and then west on Highway 74. It's a genuinely worthwhile drive and one we'd still build a full day around, but it isn't a five-minute trip from the cabin, and the roads through this part of the Ozarks are curvier and slower than they look on a phone screen. Give yourself more time than the map suggests, especially if you're also planning to float the river or hike while you're out that way.
If floating the Buffalo is on your list, keep in mind it's a free-flowing river, so conditions change through the year — spring tends to be most reliable, and sections of the upper river can run low by late summer. Check current levels before you build a day around it.
Closer to home, downtown Jasper is a short drive north and worth an evening — small, walkable, and a good place to grab dinner or wander after a day outside.

We built Mountain Crest to work both ways, and guests use it both ways almost evenly. Families take over the whole cabin for a long weekend — everyone cooking together in the morning, the kids on the sleeper sofas, the adults out on the balcony after dark. Couples book it just as often for something quieter: the jetted tub, the fireplace, nowhere to be.

A Few Things We Tell First-Time Guests
Download offline maps before you head out. Cell service gets spotty once you're off the highway.
Bring real shoes, even for a short walk to an overlook — the ground out here is uneven.
Check Buffalo River levels before planning a float. Water conditions change throughout the year.
Give yourself extra driving time. Newton County roads are scenic but slow, and ten miles here rarely feels like ten miles on the interstate.
Pack for temperature swings, especially in spring and fall, when mornings and afternoons can feel like different seasons entirely.
When to Visit
Spring brings green mountains and generally the most reliable float conditions on the Buffalo. Summer is warm and popular for family trips, though river levels get less predictable as the season goes on. Fall is when this whole area turns into something worth planning a trip around — the view from Mountain Crest's balcony is especially hard to beat once the leaves start turning. Winter is quieter, with bare trees opening up views that stay hidden the rest of the year, and there's something nice about a cold evening by the fireplace after a day outside.
